15th October is Global Handwashing Day. It’s a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of washing hands with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases. The Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing describes it best: ‘Handwashing with soap is a “do-it-yourself vaccine” that prevents infections and saves lives.’
We at Initial Hygiene see, test and know that hygiene is crucial for health and wellness. We partner with businesses across Australia (and around the globe) to encourage people to wash their hands with soap at critical times.
Good hand hygiene habits can reduce risks of cross-contamination and the spread of germs. According to the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, after using the toilet, your hand can have a sq. in. bacterial population count of over 200 million. That a lot of potential for illness! That’s why it’s important to wash our hands, especially after using the toilet. The simple act of hand washing reduces the risk of getting a stomach bug as much as 47% (Curtis and Cairncross, Lancet Infectious Diseases 2003.)
Although the focus for Global Handwashing Day is on children in developing countries, it’s a good opportunity to check our own shortcomings. Stay tuned for more insights!
