Why does fragrance safety matter to your business? The wellbeing of your employees and customers is always your top priority, and you need partners who share that commitment. Choosing a scenting provider may bring questions about fragrance safety, including concerns about allergens or chemical ingredients. At Initial Hygiene, we take these concerns very seriously.
From careful ingredient selection to our service delivery, our dedication to rigorous industry safety standards, strict internal policies and ingredient transparency demonstrates our promise to deliver scenting solutions you can trust.
While many scenting providers aim to meet regulatory minimums, we’ve chosen to go further, establishing rigorous safety benchmarks that exceed what’s legally required. This isn’t just about ticking compliance boxes; it’s about helping businesses across all sectors — from hospitality and healthcare to facilities management, retail, offices and gyms — create welcoming, safe environments that support wellbeing and protect their brand’s reputation.
Our Global Fragrance Safety Policy was developed in-house by our experts to govern every aspect of fragrance selection and usage.
These guidelines include strict rules our suppliers must follow, how we adhere to national and regional chemical regulations and the ingredients and practices we prohibit, such as forbidding animal testing.
We’re proud voluntary members of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), the fragrance industry’s recognised authority.
Our fragrances fully comply with IFRA’s rigorous Code of Practice, which evaluates potential risks and limits ingredients based on safety information regarding skin allergies, adverse effects and environmental hazards.
Our fragrances and fragranced products are not classified as respiratory sensitisers, acutely toxic inhalants or substances that can cause serious health problems* under the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) or Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation.
We comply with all relevant regulations, including the EU Cosmetics Regulation (1223/2009), clearly labelling any allergens on our products. IFRA-compliant fragrances contain no respiratory sensitisers that may cause irritation to individuals with allergies or asthma.
Our fragrance development process is guided by an expert team with in-depth knowledge of ingredients and safety regulations. We only partner with suppliers who are also IFRA members and follow our Global Fragrance Safety Policy.
We go beyond IFRA compliance to reinforce that customer safety is a top priority for Initial Hygiene, giving businesses confidence that they’re creating a welcoming environment while upholding the highest standards.
The fragrance compounds we use in our solutions are the same types of ingredients commonly found in everyday products like toiletries, cosmetics, fine fragrances and cleaning products, all of which are used safely in various settings.
The key to safety for any scent, whether natural or artificial, is controlled exposure. While anything can be harmful if concentrations are too high, our scenting devices are specifically designed to minimise potential exposure by carefully diluting fragrances to low levels in the air. For example, in environments like hotels and retail spaces where people spend extended time indoors, our scenting systems are calibrated to deliver a gentle, even diffusion. This ensures the fragrance is effective and welcoming without ever being intrusive or overpowering.
Additionally, only our trained technicians come into contact with the fragrances in their concentrated form and always use appropriate safety measures during your service.
We’re committed to your business’ safety at every stage of fragrance production, ensuring our fragrances are free from any substances that could cause ethical or safety concerns. In adherence to our Global Fragrance Safety Policy’s strict ingredient controls, our fragrances and fragranced products do not contain:
This includes substances like ambergris, civet, castoreum, natural musks, rosewood oil and sandalwood oil.
This can be used in fragrance compositions for sweet, spicy or floral scents, but regulatory bodies like IFRA restrict its use due to its potential to cause genetic damage or increased cancer risks.
These can be used in fragrance compositions for musky scents, but we don’t use polycyclic and nitro musks due to concerns about their environmental impact and potential to bioaccumulate.
These can be used as fixatives to make fragrances last longer, but their potential to act as endocrine disruptors means many manufacturers now restrict or avoid them.
This refers to the European Union’s Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Annex XIV or XVII.
This refers to substances that, when inhaled, can trigger an allergic reaction in the respiratory system.
This refers to chemicals that are considered particularly dangerous due to their potential to cause cancer, genetic mutations or reproductive harm.

**Important note: while we never directly add these classified substances, they may sometimes occur naturally in fragrance mixtures. In these rare cases, we conduct a thorough safety assessment to ensure the final product is safe.

Complying with all relevant regulations, including the EU Cosmetics Regulation (1223/2009), is vital to our commitment to consumer safety, so we clearly label any allergens on our products.
